'En plein air' and detailed studio painter of Cornish land and seascapes in oils.
Cornwall offers a world of wonderful inspiration, from the secluded rocky coves, historic harbours and open ruggedness of the Moor, I am spoilt for subject matter.
My paintings are very much an exploration of the Cornish landscape and it's changing seasons. The challenge is to create an accurate depiction of the view by recording the atmosphere, light, colour and depth.
Using oils, I create small paintings, painted 'en plein air', working quickly to capture the energy and colour of the scene.
These are also used as references for my larger pieces which I paint in the studio and can take many months to complete. Pencil and graphite sketches are also an important part of my process. Sometimes to simplify the scene prior to painting. I require all of these references before carrying out a larger and more detailed piece.
